Hi, I’m Liam – welcome to Pet Names Lovers.
This site exists because of a problem I kept running into myself: every time I searched for a name for a new pet, I’d land on a page with a giant list of names and nothing else. No personality match. No sense of why a name might suit a stubborn tabby versus a goofy Labrador puppy. Just names, dumped in a grid, with maybe a cute icon next to them.
So I started building the resource I actually wanted to use.
Why I care about this so much
I’m not a vet or a professional animal behaviourist; I’m someone who has spent a lot of time around pets and an unreasonable amount of time thinking about what makes a name “fit”. A name isn’t just a label you call across the yard. It shapes how you think about your pet, what people assume about their personality before they even meet them, and honestly, how fun it is to yell across a dog park.
Over time, that curiosity turned into research: naming trends by species and breed; the psychology of why certain sounds feel “friendly” or “regal” or “silly”; name meanings across different languages and cultures; and what actually makes a name easy for an animal to learn and respond to.

Pet Names Lovers is built for a few different kinds of people:
- New pet owners who want a name that actually reflects their dog, cat, bird, or small animal’s personality not just whatever’s trending this month
- Breeders and shelters naming litters or intake animals who need ideas that are easy to say, easy to tell apart, and easy for adopters to fall in love with
- Owners of more unusual pets reptiles, rabbits, horses, exotic birds who struggle to find lists that go beyond cats and dogs
- Anyone who just wants the story behind a name: where it comes from, what it means, and why it works so well for an animal
What ties all of that together is the same thing that frustrated me in the first place: people don’t just want a list, they want context. They want to know why a name works before they commit to calling it out loud for the next fifteen years.
How articles here get made
Every piece on this site starts with a real question one I’d want answered myself if I were choosing a name for my own pet. For naming guides based on themes, origins, or characteristics (mythology-inspired names, food-inspired names, names by breed temperament, and so on), I dig into naming trend data, language and meaning references, and breed-specific behaviour resources rather than just recycling whatever list is already ranking well elsewhere.
For the lighter, more playful lists funniest pet names, best duo names, name ideas by color or markings I still put thought into why they work: how the name sounds out loud, how memorable it is, and what associations it carries.
I’m a solo operator here. I write, edit, and publish everything myself, and I don’t put anything on this site I wouldn’t recommend to a friend picking out a name for their own pet.
A note on how I work
I use research and writing tools, including AI-assisted ones, to help speed up drafting and organizing information. Nothing goes live as a raw first draft, though every article is reviewed, edited, and checked by me before publishing. The final judgment calls, the accuracy checks, and the actual recommendations are mine.

What I’m working toward
My goal for Pet Names Lovers isn’t to have the longest name lists on the internet it’s to make each guide the one you’d actually bookmark or send to a friend who just adopted a puppy. Useful over padded. Accurate over trendy.
